"O you are well tuned now; but I'll set down the pegs that make this music"
Iago in Othello by Shakespeare

Invidia is the fatal flaw of Shakespeare's Iago. She is one of the Seven Deadly Sins in Christianity and is on one of the lowest levels in Dante's Purgatorio. She "is sitting on the ground, eating viper's flesh as a source of venom to nourish her vices" in Ovid's Metamorphoses... Behind many of our evil deeds, she herself is envy.

But does envy necessarily lead to destruction?
Or could it actually motivate or inspire?
Is it not simply a natural human instinct that can be used for good or ill?

When musicians "envy"
It used to be a custom in early classical music or folk traditions to borrow verses and melodies from contemporary sources, and citation could even indicate respect or worship. In 1998, B.B. King remarked: "I don't think anybody steals anything; all of us borrow."

Those and similar thoughts inspired this concert program. Throughout history, composers have always favoured two instruments: the piano and the violin, a vast number of masterpieces of the classical repertoire having been composed for them. But what if you play another instrument?

Risking the Fall or Purgatory, in this project we will perform only transcriptions, envied masterpieces, on the viola and cello, with piano accompanment here and there.
