DON´T MISS MYSELF ANYMORE

perf thea copy

The new work of the experimental sound artist and performer, Thea Soti is based on a research about the modern perception of our excessively represented human bodies. It analyzes the impact of visual information on personal and socio-cultural identity. The sensations of our own and other bodies through constructed, well-controlled images constantly question and confuses our reality. Soti´s poetic sound art will here be combined with video installation and performance, investigating the topic through movement, space and disrupted storytelling. Warm, intimate, thus occasionally uncomfortable or even provocative spaces are created, where the artist´s own voice - recycled into noise or electronic sounds - further challenges our pre-conceptions and expectations of what a body is. The research and the project has been realized in intense collaboration with the Brussels-based choreographer, Klaas Devos.

The installation performance has been specifically developed for the underground spaces of the Balassi Institute in Brussels. Supported by the i-Portunus Mobility Programme and the Balassi Institute of Brussels, funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

ABOUT THE CREATORS:

Thea Soti (performance, sound and video installation) is a Hungarian experimental sound artist and composer based in Cologne, Germany. Her main focus is researching the human voice as an instrument and combining structures of improvisation and electro-acoustic composition with performative arts. She often explores space and movement in her pieces, integrating installative and performative setups. She is regarded as a courageous and uncompromising voice at the interface of creative contemporary music, experimental sound art and performance. Her pieces (Crushing Concrete, Liquid Fears, Flesh Cages, BiiiiiiiiiRD, VØICES, Pain Mirrors) research either actual socio-political topics, such as eating disorder, modern representation of the female body, beauty myths, collective fear, brutality or extreme psychological states and conditions. She has cooperated and toured with various international orchestras and ensembles as a composer and as a performer likewise. She is a founding member of the European composer´s collective SUNG SOUND, part of the new-age artist collective fx.LAB and co-curator of the experimental concert series STIMMUNGEN in Loft Cologne.

Klaas Devos (choreography, dramaturgy & artistic research) is a freelance choreographer and researcher exploring the intimate poetry of knowing and thinking bodies and the aesthetics of the (mis)understandings between them. He graduated performing arts theory and philosophy studies (UAntwerp) and has an extensive background in practicing dance research (P.A.R.T.S., a.pass). Devos’ aesthetic research focuses on generative scores and dialogues with contemporary music, visual and digital arts, and neuroscience. In 2016, Devos made his first work for large group (Almosteverythinghappens), which opened up an ongoing artistic research looking for the dynamic environments where we practice movement interpretations together. This exploration of aesthetics of misunderstandings through new media, dance, and sound are further rendered in his last work for Solo for Nervous System (2018). The researches and performances are organized in collaboration with the undisciplined collective ’Barey imaginable Beings.’
