Date: 17 May - 7 June 2018 - Balassi Institute

We celebrate the 170th anniversary of the Hungarian Defence Forces in 2018. The HM, Museum and Institution of Military History organised a travelling exhibition for this special occasion, which aim is to show the public the events of these 170 years and furthermore, it demonstrates the most important milestones and items of the era.
These 170 years have been divided into five large units for the exhibition: 1948-1868, 1868-1918, 1918-1945, 1945-1990, and finally, the period from 1990 up until the present day. Each and every stage is characterized by a uniform and a flag that was the most common in the era.
The time of the revolution of 1848 is recalled by a hunting soldier lieutenant. The corps with assorted crew hunters, trained for individual combat can be regarded as precursors of today's elite troops. The group flag of the army’s infantry is also linked to the Hungarian Revolution. The symbol of the „second Hungarian Army”, established after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, is a private hussar which represents the highly known Hungarian forces, the hussars.
The establishment of the gunnery forces in 1913 and the rank of the gunnery sergeant is connected to the Great War, whose honours on his uniform were referred to his battlefield service. The group flag of the M army group of 1868 is also connected to the period of the Monarchy and the First World War.
The Horthy-era and the period of the Second World War is represented by the uniform of the corporal of the Hungarian Royal Airforce, alongside with the M group flag of 1938.
The years from 1945 until the change of the regime are represented by one of the most famous uniforms of the era, which is the MN 46th warship brigade’s, also known as ’flotilla’, sailor-uniform. The events of 1956 are recalled by the 1950’s M group flag, from which the coat of arms of Rákosi was cut out.
The exhibition cannot be complete without the presentation of the new uniform, lately introduced by the Army, which is demonstrated on a model of a military police. In addition to this, the M group flag of 1990, which is used nowadays as well, represents the era of our days.
While preparing the exhibition, we placed some objects that played an emblematic role in the history of the Hungarian Defence Forces. One of them is the black officer's cap, which was the symbol of the officers for decades, as well as the 1861 M Infantry Officer's officer sabre, whose modern version is given to the newly inaugurated officers.
The solders, battling on the frontline are reminded by the M steel-helmet from 1935, and the Bocskai cap, being the most specific Hungarian solider helmet is also presented. The two exhibited guns are the M Mannlicher private riffle form 1935, being the arm of Hungarian soldiers during the Great War, which also had an important role during the Second World War, alongside with the M AMD assault rifle from 1965, which represents the line infantry and our recent times.
The exhibition’s iconic element is the ‘Wall of Heroes’ on which six Hungarian soldiers’ portraits, honours and short biographies with a special life path are presented.
