Opening ceremony: 5 September 2019, 5 PM - La Patinoire Royale - galerie Valérie Bach

6 September – 7 December 2019

La Patinoire Royale - Galerie Valérie Bach is pleased to present "Painting Belgium, abstractions in times of peace 1945-1975", an important exhibition aimed to give an account of the incredible artistic abundance that characterized the after-war period. The painters, mostly born before World War 2, were keen on experiment, and sought new and sincere ways of expression in abstraction.

Pál HORVÁTH (1936) is a Hungarian-born Belgian painter, collage artist, sculptor and serigraph. Fleeing from the Soviet repression, he arrived in Brussels in 1956 as a political refugee. He studied at La Cambre Art School and the Academy of Fine Arts. From the 1960s, he has worked as commercial graphic artist, besides this, has joined international art movements and groups such as concrete art, CAP (Circle Prospective Art) and MADI. His first solo exhibition in Brussels opened in 1972. Inspired by Bauhaus, he favours archetypal geometric shapes and daring colour combinations like acid green with lemon yellow or red cherry. In his words: "The colour comes from light and my work is between shadow and light. The form is finished, everything is just formal repetition, no need to cut, paste, twist. All of this is over; there is only the cosmos and light with its radiation particle."

The exhibition also features the paintings of:

Pierre ALECHINSKY, Gabriel BELGEONNE, Gaston BERTRAND, Bram BOGART, Anne BONET, Elie BORGRAVE, Jan BURSSENS, Zephir BUSINE, Jacques CALONNE, Georges COLLIGNON Amédée CORTIER, Jan COX, Gilbert DECOCK, Jo DELEHAUT, Christian DOTREMONT, Berthe DUBAIL, Roger DUDANT, Jo DUSTIN, René GUIETTE, Francine HOLLE, Pierre LAUHAUT, Walter LEBLANC, Jules LISMONDE, Marc MENDELSON, Jean MILO, Antoine MORTIER, Luc PEIRE, Mig QUINET, Jean RETS, Paul SCHROBLITGEN, Gilbert SWIMBERGHE, Jan VAN DEN ABBEEL, Englebert VAN ANDERLECHT, Suzanne VAN DAMME, Giséle VAN LANGE, Louis VAN LINT, Dan VAN SEVEREN, Guy VAN DEN BRANDEN, Serge VANDERCAM, Jef VERHEYEN, Mark VERSTOKT, Marthe WERY, Maurice WYCKAERT
