URBAN STORIES – concert of Thea Soti & Jonas Engels

Librebook in collaboration with the Balassi Institute presents the concert URBAN STORIES, a collaboration between Hungarian new-age vocalist Thea Soti and German saxophonist Jonas Engel.

URBAN STORIES is based on the urban environment, on the sounds and stories of big cities. The compositions for voice and saxophone integrate into the music the stories, sounds and voices of urban areas. The city, the milieu is the key element, which is organically embedded into the music. The two musicians are constantly looking for new and unfamiliar formats for their concerts; they wish to change the perception of live music and to reach new audiences. The music reflects the city, but it also mirrors the musical background of the two musicians: the compositions are a mix of elements from jazz to classical music, resting on improvisation. They place great emphasis on the lyrics as well, poetry being another key element of URBAN STORIES. We can call their performance a new-age chamber music experience in an urban setting.

The concert makes part of Librebook's event "European storytelling & books".

THEA SOTI

A new-age vocalist, experimental sound artist and composer currently based in Cologne, Germany. Born in Subotica (Serbia) to a Hungarian family, she studied jazz singing and composition in Berlin, Hannover, Cologne (DE) and Lucerne (CH). Her main focus is working with the human voice as an instrument and combining structures of free improvisation with open compositions, either for large or small ensembles. She is regarded as a courageous and uncompromising voice at the interface of creative jazz, modern pop music, avant-garde poetry and improvised music. In addition to her interdisciplinary projects with dancers, she enjoys working on the borderline between language, sound and text. Lately, her interest has shifted towards working with performance art and sound installations. As a composer, she has cooperated with various big bands and large ensembles (Modern Art Orchestra, Daniel Sebastian Scholz Big Band, Subway Jazz Orchestra, Fette Hupe, Cherry Tree Orchestra and Tonhallen Orchestra). She is a founding member of the European composer´s collective SUNG SOUND and co-curator of the experimental concert series "STIMMUNGEN" in Loft Cologne.

JONAS ENGEL

A German saxophonist, an exciting voice of the young creative jazz scene in Cologne. He is known for his edgy and powerful sound integrating extended techniques. He studied in Cologne with Roger Hanschel, Claudius Valk, Frank Gratkowski and with Torben Snekkestad in Copenhagen and is a multiple-award-winner for band and solo at the Youth Jazz Awards. He was part of the renowned German National Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) led by Jiggs Whigham and Niels Klein. He is the leader of the band “Own Your Bones”, a quartet which daringly exploits the possibilities of sound and composition for two saxophones. Engel´s other project is the successful jazz-trio “Just Another Foundry”, which has won several jazz awards throughout Europe. Concert tours throughout Europe, South America, Middle East, China and South-East Asia.
